LGBTQ+ Definitions

Educators often don’t discuss LGBTQ+ people or topics in their schools because they are unsure of what to say or are afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Welcoming Schools resources include lists of developmentally appropriate vocabulary about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and queer identities.

It is critical for LGBTQ words to be used respectfully and correctly in school settings by educators, as this can help reduce LGBTQ words being used as put-downs.

Learning LGBTQ vocabulary can help students see and understand the diversity and complexity of LGBTQ students and families in your school community.
